What is an OHS management system?
Sometimes abbreviated to just OHSMS, it is a system for managing occupational health & safety.
An OHSMS is most often a formal documented system that includes the following elements:
- A safety policy
- A programme for training and ensuring competency
- A framework for involving employees in the management of OHS
- The collection, analysis and reporting of safety performance data
- The identification of hazards in the workplace
- The assessment of the risk they pose to people
- The elimination or control of those risks
- The evaluation of the effectiveness of the control measures
- Arrangements for emergency preparations and response
- Systems for monitoring the effectiveness of OHS arrangements
- Systems for monitoring the health of workers
- Systems for the reporting and investigation of accidents / incident
- Controls over documents and records
- A programme of internal audits and management review to wnsure that the system continues to meet
objectives and requirements
An OHSMS should address the legislation and standards applicable in the organization's
legal jurisdiction. Many jurisdictions specify the actual method of consultation,
training, incident reporting, emergency responses, health surveillance, health
monitoring and risk management.
Introducing the standards
Organisations seeking external verification for their system will need to meet a standard -
such as AS/NZS 4801:2001 or OHSAS 18001.
This standard is a specification and guidance for use of an OHSMS, and provides a widely accepted model. It is widely used as the foundation
of a management system designed to address various health and safety, and other compliance requirements.
What is Safety Manager?
In a single sentence, Safety Manager is a comprehensive toolkit for developing an
OHS management system based on the requirements of AS/NZS 4801:2001 and OHSAS 18001.
Safety Manager is not a completed OHS management system - ready for you to insert your name
in the right spots. We do not believe that such an approach is useful, but believe that
Safety Manager offers something much greater...
